At Lake Attersee (OÖ.Tourismus)

Upper Austria has a large number of lakes and rivers. People who enjoy water recreation can choose from a variety of activities ranging from leisurely boat cruises, to wind surfing to diving and experiencing an incredible underwater world.

The »Land ob der Enns« is ideal for sailing and surfing and a variety of other water sports. The Salzkammergut region alone has over 76 lakes to chose from, each of them unique and special in their own way. For example, Austria’s deepest lake, Lake Traunsee, lies at the foot of the majestic Traunstein Mountain and provides an ideal backdrop to enjoy a day of sailing or windsurfing. The »Wassersportarena Traunsee« (Water Sports Arena Traunsee) offers professional classes to learn how to sail, kitesurf, surf or wakeboard. There are countless opportunities to engage in recreational activities of all kinds in, on or under the water. The Traunsee often has good winds and is home to the annual Allianz Traunsee Week in May, the largest sailing event in Austria. The RC44 Austria Cup, the Formula One of sailing, also takes place on Traunsee.

The lakes Mondsee and Irrsee, located between majestic mountains, offer an array of water activities for young and old alike. Mondsee and Irrsee are two of the warmest lakes in the Salzkammergut region, ideal for a day of family fun. There are many special offers catering to families as well as Austria’s largest outdoor swimming pool boasting the longest water slide in the area as well as one of the largest schools in German-speaking Europe to learning how to sail and surf. You can enjoy water recreation 24 hours a day!

The Lake Attersee is also ideal for water recreation. The largest inland lake in Austria, Lake Attersee is large enough for visitors to enjoy long boat cruises. The lake’s unique topography makes it a paradise for divers. Lake Wolfgangsee, sung about in many Austria folk songs and the location of many Austrian movies, is also ideal for water recreation.

Those seeking thrills or looking to try out a new water sport can find unlimited opportunities in the area between the Dachstein and the Bohemian Forest. Whether enjoying the sparkling surface of the large lakes in the Salzkammergut region or on rivers such as the Enns, Steyr and Traun: fun and entertainment are an integral part of a vacation in Upper Austria. Visitors can also opt to challenge themselves and participate in daring rafting adventures, turbulent kayak journeys, and canoe excursions on the cascading wild waters located between the Bohemian Forest and the Dachstein. By remaining calm and positive in the face of uncertainty; you can show the world that you have what it takes!

If you are still looking for an adventure to test your nerves, Canyoning may be for you. Participants may not suffer from vertigo and must be strong swimmers to take on an adventurous tour through the spectacular river valleys. For those looking for speed, water skiing and tube-riding (on an inflated tube towed by boat) may be your kind of activity.
Parasailing is another popular activity not for the faint of heart, taking parasailers straight from the water up into the air to experience the sheer thrill and excitement of being airborne.

SCUBA DIVING IN UPPER AUSTRIA

The colorful underwater world and good infrastructure in the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut region continues to attract an increasing number of scuba divers. The lakes are a scuba diver’s heaven with impressive underwater flora and fauna where divers can explore almost all areas of the lakes (except for privately owned areas, protected breeding grounds, and culture protected zones). Beginners should attend diving classes or participate in a diving program to learn basic techniques and skills to enjoy diving safely. Divingclubs and diving schools can be found at Hallstättersee, Attersee, Traunsee and Mondsee. Be aware that diving in Lake Attersee can be more risky than it looks. As the water is clear and offers excellent visibility, hobby divers often dive deeper than they should.
